Improved Sherline Style 2-1/2″ Adjustable Zero Hand Wheels with Needle Roller Thrust Bearing.
These are the same Sherline hand wheels that we supply with our Taig and Sherline Power Feed systems, however Phil has modified these hand wheels with an easier to use adjustable zero locking wheel that makes it easier to operate, by including a long screw and an 1/8″ spacer the locking wheel is easier to grasp, and easier to turn.
Using the Adjustable Zero Feature
These Sherline adjustable zero hand wheels allow you to re-zero the hand wheel for more precise cutting operation. During your machining operation, at any time, you can simplify your calculations by resetting the hand wheel to “zero”. Gently hold the hand wheel in position with one hand while releasing the lock nut with the other. Rotate the red anodized, laser engraved collar until the “zero” setting is aligned with the scribed mark on your tool or thrust bearing collar. Then retighten the locking nut. Now you can crank in the exact amount of feed you want by reading the number directly off the hand wheel.
The hand wheels have a 1/4″ shaft hole with set screw and can be used for applications other than on Sherline tools.
Phil’s Professional Tips
I recommend using the 2-1/2″ hand wheel with the needle roller thrust bearing for the “Z” axis, on the mill. It supports the weight of the motor and headstock and ensures that you have no binding or run out. I believe you will love this hand wheel because it will give you more precise control for your milling needs.
